perhaps someone who speaks English could help?

I am looking into making a visit to Indonesia for railfan purposes and wish to make a lot of trips by rail. Is there any type of unlimited travel tourist railpass available, or alternatively, a season ticket? I would be making journeys all day every day for over a week.

If neither of those are available, what is the situation regarding buying regular tickets for travel on Executive, Business and Economy trains? Which require a reservation? Is it possible to board a train without a reservation and pay for a ticket on board?

Apologies for the first post with all the questions but this looked like the best place to find some answers.

Unfortunately, Indonesian passenger railway operator (PT.KAI) doesn't have tourist railpass nor seasonal ticket. You have to buy tickets for each train one-by-one. All railway classes (Executive, sometimes we call it K1, business class (K2) and economy class (K3) ) can be reserved 90 days prior to departure, (except for some regional train in which you have to buy at the same day in the station).

You can buy ticket through the official website http://tiket.kereta-api.co.id (no english options, can't buy subsidized economy class) or using some non-official websites ( http://tiketkai.com no english options, need to be a member or http://tiket.com/train with english options without need to be a member)

Don't forget to obtain a boarding pass in the departure station by showing the proof of purchase to ticket kiosk. In major station, they have separated kiosk to obtain a boarding pass[es], but in small station, there's only 1 kiosk to do so.

If a train is fully reserved and I were to board it anyway, without a ticket, what would the outcome be? Would I be made to buy a ticket, ejected from the train or something worse (police)?

It depends of the departure date and schedule. Usually, red eye trains are fully reserved on Friday and Sunday, while all trains can be fully reserved on holidays. You can't get aboard train without a ticket, since in most major stations there is boarding system & security system.

I recommend to book at 1-2 months before departure. Actually you can buy a ticket in a due time the train will depart on the same day, but the chance is pretty slim, because people has knew that the ticket could be full booked, so they bought it earlier.

Based on my experience, if you've board a train which has full booked (or fully reserved), whatever the circumtances you have, the train conductor will drop off or eject the passenger that considered doesn't have a ticket. In the past, we often buy a passepartout ticket (karcis suplisi we called it) if we don't have a ticket. But, it happen in regional train only.

without ticket, you can't go to the platform. the security officers will check everyone passing the gate. they will ask for your identity and match it with your tickets. if clear, then you'll be allowed to go to the platform. ticket checking is also conducted once you've arrived at your seat and during the trip. so, ensure your trip plan and book the tickets as early as possible.

For my suggestion remembering that you're still in your country & possibly having some problem to do the reservation by yourself (especially with the payment), I may help u to suggest the suitable schedule & spare time in each city. I also willing to lend a hand for reserving & handle your transaction before u come. As other member's suggestion u to reserve your ticket atleast a month before your trip, how about if u tell me your plan to do the trip & the route u choose (whether u want to circled arround java island or do u also want to include your trip in sumatra island), I'll help u to advicing your trip till it's set as close as your wish, after that we'll talk about the budget (without personal charge for guiding service). I can't suggest u to do a trip without a ticket, as the boarding system of our train here now is as strict as a domestic flight. So since the opening gate u'll got abborted from the platform. What do u say?
